Aquaponics takes some trial-and-error to get right, and almost every farmer will encounter a few mistakes and problems along the way.
It’s not always easy to know what to do when something happens – like when a fish dies or you spill 10 lbs of feed into the system. So just what should aquaponicists do?
Once you’ve identified a problem in your aquaponics system, you have to decide how to react.
9/10ths of the time, the best response is no response! That can be hard to swallow sometimes, because as humans we want to fix things!
In reality, your system is very hardy. Ecosystems naturally respond and re-stabilize after a disturbance just as a trait of how they’re structured. Your system is an ecosystem and will almost always be able to come back after a disturbance. Sometimes, reacting by trying to fix the problem with weird additives or removing parts of the system will just cause another disturbance when the system is vulnerable. This is what you DON’T want to do!
