I have decided to create a new video series calling “Building a Bug Out Bag” that will show my process of redesigning my current Bug Out Bag (BOB) / 72-hour emergency backpack.
I’ll be honest. My current B.O.B. absolutely sucks. It is extremely heavy, is completely unorganized, is missing key items, and is an embarrassing existence. I won’t even show it to you guys.
I am planning on having my new B.O.B. be highly organized and functional. I plan on having all items stored in specific compartments, which I will be covering in the video series one by one. I plan on creating a R&D (research and development) video for each compartment, and then creating a finalized compartment video that shows what I decided on.
I am planning on using two main sources of inspiration in the creation of my new B.O.B. The first is Ultralight backpackers, as well as experienced “Thru-Hikers” (Ex: Erik The Black). This will help me achieve the goal I have of making a bag that is a lot lighter than my current one. The second inspiration are backpackers who carry lots of “Capabilities/Functionality”, ala Nutnfancy. I am hoping to find a good balance between the two approaches.
I am really hoping that I can get a lot of quality input from the YouTube community, as I do not consider myself an expert in this field. I do consider myself an obsessive researcher, so whatever I come up with I know I will have studied diligently on. Hopefully, by the end of the series, I will have a new and improved Bug Out Bag that is highly functional, lightweight and is something I can be proud of for years to come. If this topic is uninteresting to you, or you find it stupid, please refrain from unnecessary or negative comments that will distract from the goal of this video series. I’m sure there are other YouTube videos that will better meet your entertainment needs.
I consider this project as family “Life Insurance”. Yeah, I know I may never need to use this backpack. But I also may never need to use my Term Life Insurance either (in the near future at least). Just last night, I witnessed the Japan Earthquake/Tsunami unfold on CNN. I couldn’t help but think, “I would sure want to have a good Bug Out Bag if I were over there right now”. That horrific event is also helping me get motivation to prepare for an emergency, either nature or man made, to help me protect and care for my new family.
